Fine-Blend SMA Coupling Agents

SMA is a copolymer of maleic anhydride. Maleic anhydride is a very reactive molecule that provides the copolymer with an effective functional group. As a coupling agent, it can then react and bond with the active groups of glass fiber and other materials. 

Fine-Blend manufactures three SMA grades, each with its own specific features: 
Fine-Blend SAM-002, SAM-0120, and SAM-020.

Fine-Blend SAM-002

Fine-Blend SAM-002 is a random ter-polymer of Styrene, Acrylonitrile, and about 3% of Maleic Anhydride (in this respect, it is a SAN-MAH copolymer) with relatively high molecular weight for applications in polymer compounds.

Fine-Blend SAM-002 can provide versatile bonding solutions in products like GF PA/ABS and GF PC/ABS, maximizing the mechanical strength of the composite with only a moderate increase of the viscosity. 

Fine-Blend SAM-0120

Fine-Blend SAM-0120 is also a random ter-polymer of Styrene, Acrylonitrile, with about 10% of Maleic Anhydride.

It can greatly improve the interfacial strength between polymer and glass fiber or mineral filler and provide a good balance of properties to ABS, ASA, and PA/ABS-based composites.

It is also very effective in the compatibilization of PA/ABS blends and is synergic to the impact modification of polyamides.

Fine-Blend SAM-020

Fine-Blend SAM-020 is a truly random Styrene-Maleic Anhydride copolymer with as much as 20% Maleic Anhydride (a 4:1 ratio between Styrene and Maleic Anhydride) and high molecular weight.

In appearance, it is a colorless, transparent copolymer in beads form.

It provides the outmost bonding strength to ABS and ASA composites with glass fiber and mineral fillers. 

SMA Modifiers Uses

In general, SMA modifiers are used to improve mechanical properties, impact strength, HDT, dimensional stability, heat resistance of polymeric materials, and to help processability in thermoforming. 

Applications span from automotive, packaging, and consumer electronics.

SMA additives can also boost the performance and value of prime and recycled ABS and other polymers and extend thermal stability and processing window.

By increasing surface polarity, they make parts molded from these resins easier to bond, paint, plate, and print on.
