Flame Retardant Rules and Regulations 

Safety regulations are getting stringent across the globe; at the same time, toxicity and environmental concerns are constraining the use of traditional FRs. Regulatory restrictions imposed by RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) in electrical and electronic equipment and WEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) in Europe on halogenated flame retardants paved the way for new technologies such as phosphorous, nitrogen, and inorganic aluminum and magnesium compounds.

Organophosphates as Flame Retardants

There are technical and legislative drivers that are forcing change in the flame retardant product market. One solution is organophosphates.

Organophosphates contain phosphorus and are typically ammonium polyphosphate and melamine-polyphosphate and combinations thereof. The goal of the organophosphates is to create a charring effect like the inorganic at a much lower loading, yielding better physical properties.

We will be discussing a new product that has better stability and is more efficient than existing intumescent FRs in achieving UL V-0 performance in polyolefins.

Phlamoon 1090A is a state-of-the-art intumescent non-halogenated FB, belonging to the category of organophosphates (phosphorous and nitrogen compounds.) It is based on a proprietary mixture of MPP and piperazine pyrophosphate.
