An impact modifier is added to compounded materials to enhance the strength of the plastic.
One of our impact modifiers, SOG-03, comes from our supplier and partner, Fine-Blend. SOG-03 is a POE-g-GMA (Glycidyl MethAcrylate grafted PolyOlefin Elastomer.) This product is exclusively distributed in North America by SACO AEI Polymers Distribution, a business unit of SACO AEI Distribution, part of the AESSE Investments group.
The GMA (epoxy) functional groups react to the polyester carboxyl end groups.
The polyolefin elastomer of SOG-03 has excellent flexibility and very low Glass Transition Temperature (Tg= -58 degrees Celsius) for optimal impact properties.
The SOG-03 provides toughening efficiency, thermal/color stability, and better melt flow than other common impact modifiers.
Good Flowability= Better Processability
Fine-Blend SOG-03 can also be used as a toughener in PC/PBT alloys. The graph below shows that with 3% or more of SOG-03, a 70/30 PC/PBT compound reached brittle-to-ductile transition.
The impact-fracture surface of the super-tough PC/PBT blend on the right shoes a typical ductile mechanism.
